The Kennel Club Health Survey

Introduction

All of us hope that the Border Terriers in our care will live happy, fulfilled and healthy lives, whether as companion dogs, working dogs or show dogs. Given good general health, Borders live into the teens of years and are active almost to the end. Their sense of fun, natural curiosity about life and gregarious nature mean that they are never far away from us, giving us unconditional love and friendship.

Dogs are also good for our own health. They encourage us to exercise; play with them, do agility, tracking and obedience. Stroking and caring for dogs is known to lower stress and blood pressure, so we have much to thank them for.

But what do we do for them? Worm them regularly. Take care of their teeth, claws and coats - general maintenance is essential, but there may be hidden problems within our wonderful breed which we may fail to recognize, or discover too late.

The Kennel Club is working very hard to ensure that our breed, along with every other pedigree breed, is 'Fit for Function'. To do this, it is asking every owner to complete and return a health survey devised by itself and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association, with the aim of addressing and eradicating any inherited diseases presented by pedigree dogs.

Even in Border terriers, which have few serious health issues, it is still valuable and important to complete this survey, to enable data to be collated and problems nipped in the bud. Our breed standard is the template to which all responsible Border terrier breeders adhere, but breeding itself, with the mix of parental genetics, can throw up potential problems.

Please help to secure the future health of our Borders by taking the time to complete the health survey below for THE NORTHERN BORDER TERRIER CLUB. It is important to complete a separate form for each dog you own, even if it is an apparently healthy dog without any problems, as information on healthy specimens is also needed.

Please find time to do this annually for your dogs. The information is extremely valuable. Thank you.
